Assistant English Teacher Program
The City of Edmonds has had a 22-year relationship with its Sister City of Hekinan, Japan. One very important element of this relationship is the ongoing presence of an Assistant English Teacher (AET) selected by the Edmonds Sister City Commission and hired by the Hekinan Board of Education. This position assists Japanese language teachers in the Hekinan middle schools and in may ways is Edmond's unofficial "ambassador" to Hekinan.

Student Exchange
Sister City student trip1
A unique experience awaits those selected for the Sister City Student Exchange. Students are accompanied by adult chaperones and homestay with Japanese families. To be eligible and considered for the student exchange program, a student must be between 14 and 18 and submit all necessary application materials. Edmonds residency is not a requirement to participate.

Hekinan students travel to Edmonds

Fifteen Hekinan students and their chaperones visit Edmonds in early August 2011. A rewarding experience awaits those families who open their homes to visiting students. If you are interested in being a host family, volunteering, or participating in planned events during their visit, please contact the This email address is being protected from spambots.
