POSITION: POLICE OFFICER - ENTRY LEVEL Salary: $4,624 to start. Entry level wages top out at $6,174/month Requirements and job duties are the same for entry level positions as for lateral positions, with the exception of the requirement of prior police experience. POSITION: POLICE OFFICER - LATERAL ENTRY (Women and minorities are encouraged to apply) APPLICATION DEADLINE: CONTINUOUS SALARY: $5,603 to start (DOQ) DEPARTMENT: POLICE DUTIES: Primary responsibility is to protect life and property, and enforce federal, state and local laws and ordinances on behalf of the citizens. Primary duties include responding to crimes in progress; general calls for service; investigation of crimes, including questioning witnesses, and collecting and preserving evidence; making arrests and transporting prisoners to jail; testifying in court; resolving juvenile, neighbor and domestic complaints; administering first aid; performing crisis intervention; directing traffic; and providing thorough documentation of activities through report writing. PRIMARY FUNCTIONS: To perform the primary functions, employees must have the ability to handle a variety of potentially volatile and dangerous situations in a calm, confident, and effective manner; ability to drive a patrol car under normal and adverse conditions; ability to train and use firearms safely in accordance with departmental rules; ability to clean and maintain assigned firearms and vehicles; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to learn, interpret and apply modern principles, practices, and procedures of police work; ability to write clear and comprehensive reports; ability to work with the public and coworkers in a professional and courteous manner; knowledge of basic first aid procedures; ability to show initiative in performing job functions and ability to enforce federal, state and local laws. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Twenty-four months of full-time, paid service as a general authority law enforcement officer as defined in the RCW in a civilian governmental jurisdiction prior to application. The applicant must not have any period of separation from law enforcement as defined in the RCW that exceeds three (3) years prior to application at the city of Edmonds. Applicant must have successfully completed the Washington State Basic Law Enforcement Academy or be a graduate of a municipal or regional Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy or equivalent, as accepted by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission. Graduates from accepted out-of-state academies will be required to successfully complete the Washington State Basic Academy Equivalency Test within one year after employment with the Department. Tribal Officers may be accepted as lateral entry applicants if they have twenty-four months of full time, paid service with a Tribal Police Agency within Washington State and have completed the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission Basic Law Enforcement Academy and are eligible for peace officer certification by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission. Tribal Officer applicants must not have any period of separation from law enforcement that exceeds three (3) years prior to application at the City of Edmonds. All applicants must be a citizen of the United States; have a high school diploma or equivalent; valid Washington State Vehicle Operator's license with no pending risk of loss; ability to read and write the English language. Applicants must have maintained sufficient physical agility as to be able to perform the usual and regular duty assignments of a police officer. LATERAL-ENTRY PROCESS Interested applicants should contact the Edmonds Police Department Professional Standards Sergeant for confirmation of minimum qualifications and to request a lateral entry packet. After receipt of the lateral packet applicants shall complete and return the City of Edmonds application form, waivers and any other requested documents to the Edmonds Police Department, Professional Standards Sergeant. The candidate will then access the Public Safety Testing website, view our profile on that site and select a time and location to complete the written and physical agility testing portion of our lateral entry process. Once the applicant's test scores are received from Public Safety Testing an oral board interview will be scheduled at the Edmonds Police Department, as determined by our hiring needs at the time. Upon completion of the oral board interview, the applicant's scores will be combined and finalized. That score will determine the placement of the applicant on the Civil Service Commission Eligibility List. When a vacancy occurs, the Chief Examiner will certify to the Police Chief the top ten names from the eligibility list for consideration for hire. The next step will be an interview with department Command Staff. If the applicant is successful in that interview, and a vacancy exists, the department will conduct a thorough background investigation. The background investigation will include, but is not limited to, reference checks, employment verification, a polygraph test, a psychological examination and a medical examination.
